My head will be on the block tomorrow... [Jun. 30th, 2008|09:42 pm]
Stephan
Unlike the previous occasion where I simply overlooked a mistake made by another department, this one is entirely my fault and mine alone.

I did something at work today which to make a long story short is similar to typing "Delete *.*" in an important location. The reason is that most of the clients I support are very small, and only my own department uses this particular system, but with larger companies it sometimes ties in with other departments, even overseas.

This company ranks as one of our biggest. Yes, this is the type of screw up that my employer could regard as treason. I couldn't have done this at a worse time either; the closing evening of the financial year - who knows what reports might fail due to missing data.

I've made my boss aware of my idiotic blunder, and he's been very good natured about it - he even tried to cheer me up. I'm not sure he's aware of the scope yet; I've been working for this department about six months longer and have slightly more knowledge of the different functions of the database.

Tomorrow I'll have to race around and do my best to find out what other departments might be using this system, and I don't have a clue where to start.

Put it down to stress, fatigue and the ongoing pains in my neck and shoulder. When I arrived back at work today there were 214 E-mails awaiting my attention, and I haven't even reached halfway.

I hate being human. I ***REALLY*** hate being human.

I'd rather be in your shoes than living as a wild or captive animal, myself. Still, I sympathize.

Times like these make me think I'm the rat running the maze, when all the other rats are much smarter than me. Kangaroos don't have to run mazes.

Nothing happened today, but that's not necessarily good news. The problem with fallout is that you often don't know when you're going to be cooked.

Incidentally something did happen today that upsets me. They've changed the arrangements for our whole office. We used to have a Manager/Assistant arrangement but now in their wisdom they've decided to have an assistant pool (like a typing pool) in an attempt to distribute the work more fairly. I think this is an utterly stupid idea because what often happens typing pools is that the fastest typists are given the most work. In our situation I can expect that the assistants with a better track record will be called upon more often. If that wasn't bad enough they've put me next to the nosiest, most annoying ditz in the whole office...

...my blood pressure is going to skyrocket.

If nothing else, I'm going to miss sitting adjacent to my (soon to be ex) boss. He and I have co-operated especially well under some expecially trying circumstances. How on earth am I going to cope with the same types of problems now? This new arrangement is going to be a disaster!

There has still been no fallout.

There's nothing more I can do unless someone in the company comes forward to say that their data is missing. I just hope that it's not at the end of the month or something. Goodness knows I've notified all the most likely departments.
